Solar Sauce Blue Back

Stacie’s Whole30 Solar Sauce

Jump to RecipeThere’s a variety of names for this Secret, Special, Bam Bam, Spread also known as 1000 Island Dressing but I call it Stacie’s Solar Sauce.  Why, because it’s outta this world good.  My Whole30 Solar Sauce is great on so many levels.  It’s got a creamy, sweet tang that you look for in all those other sauces, except mine is a clean and healthier version.

Mayonnaise

First of all, I use Whole30 approved Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil mayonnaise that is made with avocado oil, eggs, vinegar, rosemary extract, and sea salt.  That’s it.  Just 5 ingredients all set and ready to use.  You certainly can make your own very simply and quite economically but this is one area of the kitchen I prefer to buy it ready made.  For an excellent homemade version, check out this one created by my friend, Natalie, from Tastes Lovely.

No Sugar Added Ketchup

Next up, I use a no sugar added ketchup.  I prefer True Made No Sugar Added Ketchup which seriously tastes like ketchup from when I was a kid.  It has a rich deep tomato flavor that you just can’t get with many no sugar added ketchup brands.  The ingredients are very simply Tomato Puree, Apple, Vegetable Puree (carrot, butternut squash, spinach), Vinegar, Salt, Onion Powder, and Allspice.  Plus, it comes in a squeeze bottle that makes it SUPER simple to squirt on to a burger patty or drizzle over oven baked potato wedges.  No more slapping the glass jar to get a big glob dumped out on to your (hopefully) your plate.  Trust me, my big kids do not miss their old, very popular brand.

Other “Secret” Ingredients

In addition to mayo and ketchup, I add red wine vinegar, garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper annnnd drumroll please, the secret to making it super sweet: POM (pomegranate juice).  You see when I was growing up my mom never added dill pickle relish or juice to her sauces and dressings, she always used sweet pickle.  So I was looking to replicate the sweetness I was missing.  I tried apple juice but it was too fruity.  POM juice was just enough sweet without the plummy undertones I was getting from the apples. And so Stacie’s Whole30 Solar Sauce was born.

What To Use It On

This is simple, EVERYTHING!  This sauce is your salad dressing, your burger sauce, your veggie dip, and your wing dippin’ sauce.  I love it on my Crab Louie and my Chop Chop salads, making two Whole30 meals a cinch.

Tips

You can meal prep it in advance and it stays fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days.  If you have a 1/2 used jar of Whole30 compliant mayo, add the other ingredients right to the jar and give it a good shake.  See, now I’m saving you time on dishes too!  What can I say, Stacie’s Whole30 Solar Sauce makes everything taste delicious and is easy to prepare.

Notes

You do not need Whole30 compliant mayonnaise if you are not following the diet.  The ingredients above are to enjoy my traditional 1000 Island dressing in a clean form with no added sugars.   Many non compliant mayo's and ketchup's have added sugars and preservatives so I try to avoid them.
If you want my traditional 1000 Island use any brand mayo and ketchup you prefer and sub the Pom juice for 2 Tbsp sweet pickle relish and 1 Tsp sweet pickle juice.
